Port St. Lucie was laid out by General Development Corporation, which bought roughly 40,000 acres here in 1958, and the city incorporated in 1961. Homes from those first decades were built the way Florida built then: concrete slab-on-grade, and very often terrazzo poured in place. A lot of that terrazzo is still there under carpet, tile, or vinyl that went down in the 1980s and 1990s. When it comes up, the floor underneath is usually restorable.

The newer half of the city is a different problem entirely. St. Lucie West dates to the early 1990s, and Tradition began in 2006 — both master-planned, both built on modern slabs. Those floors are rarely candidates for terrazzo restoration.
